Partnership Projects
Dr. Richard Hudson recently co-authored a paper in the journal Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications with Dr. L.M. Verange Tillekeratne and Moussa Khobzaui titled, "New Inhibitors of Carbonic Anhydrase: Synthesis and Evaluation." Dr. Hudson, Dr. Tillekeratne and Dr. David M.D. Fouchard co-authored a paper in the Journal of Organic Chemistry titled, "Synthesis of Imidazolo Analogues of the Oxidation-Reduction Cofactor Pyrroloquinoline Quinone (PQQ)." Dr. Hudson also co-authored a paper in the Journal of Chromatography titled, "Chiral Separation of Highly Negatively Charged Enantiomers by Capillary Electrophoresis."
Dr. Frederick Williams and Dr. William Messer of the Department of Pharmacology recently published an article titled, "Muscarinic acetylcholine receptors in the brain of zebrafish (Danio rerio) measured by radioligand binding techniques," which appeared in the April issue of the journal "Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology, Part C." The journal contains articles which are pharmacological and toxicological in nature.
Tulane Patent Collaboration
Dr. Richard Hudson and two collaborators at Tulane University have been awarded a US Patent titled, "Methods for Protection of Stratified Squamous Epithelium Against Injury by Noxious Substances and Novel Agents for Use Thereof."
Article in Critical Connections
Dr. Martin Ohlinger, Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice at The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy, has published an article titled, "Analgesia in the ICU since the 2002 SCCM Guidelines: What’s New?" in the April 2004 issue of Critical Connections, a publication of the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM). Critical Connections is the critical care industry’s only news magazine, circulated to more than 11,000 subscribers in the healthcare industry worldwide. SCCM is the only organization that represents all professional components of the critical care team, promoting excellence in patient care, education, research and advocacy.
Chapter on Alzheimer’s Research
Dr. William S. Messer, Jr., Professor and Chair of Pharmacology at The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy, recently published a paper titled, "Drugs that Target Muscarinic Cholinergic Receptors" as a chapter in the book, Cognitive Enhancing Drugs. The book, published in 2004 by Birkhauser Verlag (Basel, Switzerland) as part of a series focused on Milestones in Drug Therapy, was edited by Professor Jerry J. Buccafusco of the Alzheimer’s Research Center at the Medical College of Georgia.
Dr. Messer’s chapter focuses on the development of new compounds for neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease and schizophrenia. Both diseases are associated with significantly impaired cognitive function, and the identification of new treatments for the devastating disorders remains a high priority for the National Institutes of Health and the pharmaceutical industry. Dr. Messer has developed and patented several compounds known as muscarinic agonists with potential utility in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and schizophrenia.
Associate Editor Appointments
"Current Drug Metabolism," a high-impact journal featuring articles and reviews by leaders in the pharmaceutical sciences, has appointed Dr. Kenneth Bachmann, a Distinguished Professor of Pharmacology at The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy, as its Associate Editor.
Dr. Richard Hudson, of The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy’s Medicinal and Biologicial Chemistry Department, was recently appointed Associated Editor of the journal, "Medicinal Chemistry Research." The international journal is dedicated to rapid communication of results of particular interest to medicinal chemistry and its application to new drug design.
Expert Opinion
Dustin Zeigler, a graduate student with The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy, has had a paper accepted for publication in "Expert Opinions in Pharmacotherapy."
