Promotions
The following faculty members at The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy have been promoted to full professor: Vincent Mauro, of clinical pharmacy/pharmacy practice; Marcia McInerney, who also serves as chair of medicinal and biological chemistry; and Katherine Wall, of medicinal and biological chemistry.
Gerry Sherman has been named director of the BSPS program.
James Slama has been named associate professor of medicinal and biological chemistry and associate professor of chemistry.
Laurie Mauro, associate professor of pharmacy practice at The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy, has been named adjunct associate professor of medicine at The Medical College of Ohio.
CD3
Dr. Peter Nagy joined the Center for Drug Design and Development in April. Peter is a computational chemist who can apply mathematical/molecular modeling approaches to several research problems at the Center. He focuses primarily on projects arising from the Center’s major grant from the USDA, modeling the interaction of molecules that may bind to estrogen receptors.
Dr. Mugunthu Dhananjeyan joined the CD3 in June. He is an experienced analytical chemist who will lead the Center’s bioanalytical chemistry core resource.
Specialty Residency
The Department of Pharmacy Practice has selected Rebecca Schaefer, PharmD, to serve a one-year specialty residency in critical care and infectious diseases, beginning in July 2004.
Prestigious Faculty Appointment
Dr. Ezdihar Hassoun, Associate Professor of Pharmacology at The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy, has been appointed by Tommy Thompson, Secretary of Health and Human Services, to serve a three-year term on a special advisory committee for the Department of Health and Human Services. The committee will study possible long-term health effects of phenoxy herbicides and contaminants.
Alumna Hired as Visiting Assistant Professor
The Department of Pharmacology at The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy is pleased to announce the recent appointment of Dr. Carolyn E. Ford to the position of Visiting Assistant Professor of Pharmacology. Dr. Ford is a 1989 graduate of The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy. She will teach a laboratory course in pharmacology/toxicology for B.S. students in the Pharmaceutical Sciences program and a statistics course for Pharm.D. students.
Human Drug Metabolism: Research Assistant Professor Hired
Dr. Scott Stuart joined the Center for Drug Design and Development at The University of Toledo as a Research Assistant Professor to assist in the Human Drug Metabolism Database project. Dr. Stuart recently graduated from Case Western University where he earned a Ph.D. in Computational Chemistry. His previous work has emphasized chemo-informatics.
Herbal Research: Recruiting a Research Assistant Professor
The Center for Drug Design and Development at The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy is recruiting a full-time Research Assistant Professor to fill a senior level position involving supervision of the Center’s Biopharmaceutical Analysis Research Laboratory. This individual will also become a key investigator within the Center’s Herbal Research Program, currently funded by the USDA with an emphasis on assessing the value of soy products as anticancer and cancer preventative agents.
Cancer Project: Research Technician Hired
Dr. Matt O’Kane joined the Center for Drug Design and Development at The University of Toledo (UT) College of Pharmacy as a Research Technician. He will assist in a special project associated with a new collaboration between the Center and the Medical College of Ohio Cancer Institute in the area of cancer-targeted diagnostic agents. Dr. O’Kane is a former UT student who has worked in the Chemistry Department Stockroom and as a part-time instructor since obtaining a B.A. in Chemistry in 2000.
Biological Screening: Research Technician Hired
Ms. Nicole Ellis has joined the Center for Drug Design and Development at The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy as a Research Technician. Ms. Ellis is a recent graduate from Hiram College in Ohio where she earned a B.S. in Biology. She will assist in the Center’s Biological Screening Program on anticancer and cancer preventative agents.
Peptide Synthesis: Work Study Hired
Mr. Timour Bascan recently joined the Center for Drug Design and Development at The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy as a part-time work-study assistant. Mr. Bascan is an undergraduate student in the University’s bioengineering and pre-med programs. He is being supervised by Dr. Wieslaw Klis and will learn about peptide synthesis while contributing to the Center’s exploration of new mechanisms to treat prostate cancer.
Completed Term
Dr. Richard Hudson recently completed a term of over three years’ service as Interim Vice-Provost for Graduate Education and Dean of the Graduate School at The University of Toledo (UT). He is returning to the Department of Medicinal and Biological Chemistry at the UT College of Pharmacy in spring 2004. During his tenure in the Graduate School, Dr. Hudson was instrumental in adjusting graduate assistantship stipends to competitive levels for most doctoral programs at UT.
