Alumna Leads Discussions at AAPS
University of Toledo College of Pharmacy alumna Dr. Sheela (Sitaraman) Das ’98 has been named Chair-elect of the Indianapolis-Cincinnati Discussion Group of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS). Dr. Das earned a Ph.D. in Medicinal Chemistry from UT after several years in Dr. Katherine Wall’s laboratory. Dr. Das is a Senior Analytical Chemist in Drug Disposition at Eli Lilly and Company.

Informing the IUPAC
Dr. Paul Erhardt, Professor and Director of the Center for Drug Design and Development at The University of Toledo (UT) College of Pharmacy, attended the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) Div. VII Subcommittee meeting on Medicinal Chemistry and Drug Development in March in Anaheim, CA. He gave three presentations on his IUPAC-sponsored projects pertaining to "A Compendium of Drug Metabolism Terms;" "A Human Drug Metabolism Database (hDMdb)" and "IUPAC Survey and Discussion Group on Present Trends in Patenting Drug-Related Technologies."

Leading an Alternative Spring Break
Dr. Martin Ohlinger, Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice at The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy (UTCP), was the Mexico Trip Leader for Toledo Campus Ministry’s Alternative Spring Break. He led students to help underserved residents of Piedras Negras, Mexico with the global outreach ministry Volunteers In Mission. UTCP student Andrew Davidson was among the team, while UTCP student Melissa Summers traveled with another group to build a Habitat for Humanity home in Birmingham, Alabama.

Alumni & Faculty: Presence & Recognition
University of Toledo College of Pharmacy faculty members Martin Ohlinger, Steve Martin and Sandy Close and several alumni attended the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) Annual Congress in February. Alumni Christine Ahrens ‘01, Andreea Popa ’02 and Nadine Chehab ‘02 shared poster presentations. Alumna Sandy Kane-Gill ‘98 was named Chair-Elect of the society’s Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacology (CPP) section. Kane-Gill, Martin and Ohlinger received Presidential Citations.

Pfizer/UTCP CE a Success
More than 70 area pharmacists attended a successful Pharmacist-Patient Consultation Program in February at the Student Union. The College of Pharmacy partnered with Pfizer to offer the free seminar to Ohio and Michigan UT alumni and local retail and institutional pharmacists. Dr. Susan Cornell of Midwestern University, Chicago College of Pharmacy, led the workshop. Participants enjoyed breakfast and lunch and earned three ACPE credits.

Faculty Senate Approves New Academic Performance Standards
At the January 2004 University of Toledo (UT) Faculty Senate meeting, the senators approved a new set of academic performance standards for students entering the UT College of Pharmacy beginning Fall 2004. Under the previous policy, a GPA of 2.7 or better was required for admission to the professional division. The revised policy mandates that students in the professional division of the PharmD program maintain a 3.0 GPA and earn a "C" or better in core-curriculum courses.

Preclinical Development Forum
Dr. Paul Erhardt, Professor and Director of the Center for Drug Design and Development at The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy, presented at the IBC Preclinical Development Forum in Boston.
