ARCHIVED HONORS AND AWARDS

USDA Grant
A grant from the USDA to the Center for Drug Design and Development was funded to study soy as part of a collaboration with Tulane University and the Southern Regional Agricultural Station. This is a grant renewal for a second round of funding. The Center’s allotment for this year is $415,924 ($541,350 with UT’s contribution).

U.S. Army Grant
A grant renewed for the third and final year of funding from the U.S. Army will allow the Center for Drug Design and Development to study inhibitors in a potential new treatment for prostate cancer. The Center’s allotment for this year is $177,500 ($211,941 with UT’s contribution).

Supercomputer
Dr. Peter Nagy’s grant submission for 2,000 RUs of time on the Ohio Supercomputer has been approved. Activities will focus on three Center for Drug Design and Development projects.

ACCP Fellow
Dr. Steven Martin, associate professor of pharmacy practice, will be inducted as a Fellow in the American College of Clinical Pharmacy in October in Dallas. The fellowship recognizes and rewards the highest levels of excellence in the practice and science of clinical pharmacy, and is the highest honor the college can bestow on its members.

Undergraduate Fellowship
James Petrone, a third year student in the BSPS program, was awarded a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship to pursue his honors undergraduate thesis with Dr. Richard Hudson. The project was titled, "Phenyl Substituted Styryl-lactones as Anticancer Agents."

deArce Memorial Fund
Dr. Marcia McInerney was recently awarded from the deArce Memorial Fund a grant titled, "Insulin Receptor Positive T-cell Transgenic Mice." The grant was one of seven grants funded. The larger aim of the work is to understand the role of insulin-receptor positive T-cells in the spontaneous development of diabetes in the non-obese mouse, which is considered to be a useful animal model system for type-1 diabetes in humans.

Dr. Katherine Wall was awarded a deArce Memorial Fund grant titled, "Interleukin-12 Effects on Muscle in Myasthenia Gravis."

Dr. Channing Hinman was awarded a deArce Memorial Fund grant titled, "Proteomic Identification of the Leukemia T Cell Receptor for the Cyclic Anticancer Peptide L1-AD3."

Sigma Xi Competition
The Department of Pharmacology is happy to announce that Sean Renock, a master’s student in the laboratory of Dr. Frederick E. Williams, won first prize in the Pharmacy and Life Sciences category for master’s level students at the Sigma Xi symposium. Mr. Renock’s poster presentation was titled, "The development of a transgenic fish line for the study of the muscarinic acetylcholine receptor hM1 in the development of Danio rerio."

Funding Neurological Research
Dr. William Messer, Jr., professor and chair of pharmacology, has received a research contract from Cognitive Pharmaceuticals Ltd., resulting from a Phase I SBIR grant to Cognitive Pharmaceuticals from the National Institute of Mental Health for a project titled, "Utility of muscarinic agonists in schizophrenia." The research grant provides $48,192 to UT in the first year, and $67,876 over two years.

Dr. Messer has received notice of a grant award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for a project titled, "Muscarinic agonists for neurological disorders." The research grant is focused on the development of new treatments for Alzheimer’s disease and schizophrenia. The grant provides $229,863 to UT for the first year, and $919,452 for four years. The project represents a competitive renewal for Dr. Messer, who has received continuous funding from NIH for the past 17 years.

ASHP Award
Matthew Moran, 5th year PharmD student, is the recipient of the 2004 ASHP (American Society of Health-System Pharmacists) Student Leadership Award and Scholarship. In acknowledgement of Matthew’s professional development, high standards of scholarship and leadership, and interest in health-system pharmacy practice, ASHP has presented him with a $250 scholarship, an AHFS Drug Handbook, and ASHP’s PharmPrep board exam preparation tool. Only one ASHP Student Leadership Award and Scholarship is presented at each college of pharmacy.

Shane Quinonez, a fourth-year BSPS student at The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy, majoring in Medicinal and Biological Chemistry, has received the top award at UT’s 2004 Latino Student Recognition ceremony. Named to the Dean’s List five times and the President’s List four times, Shane has been engaged in lab research with Dr. Slama since 2002 to understand how cells repair damaged DNA with applications to cancer treatment. Shane volunteers at Flower Hospital and tutors elementary schoolchildren in math and science. Other pharmacy students recognized as outstanding Latino students for 2004 were Kristopher Alicea, Oscar Garza, Carlotta Henriquez, Raquel Morales and Amy Sebest.

The Center for Drug Design and Development (CD3) was awarded $15,000 from the International Union of Pharmacology (IUPHAR) as a carry-over grant to continue its work on the Human Drug Metabolism Database (hDMdb). In addition to technical aspects associated with this project, the CD3 is pursuing a copyright agreement on behalf of UT, the IUPHAR and the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC).

The CD3 also completed its contract syntheses agreement with the Medical College of Ohio, wherein several batches of potential cancer diagnostic compound were prepared in the spirit of ongoing collaboration between UT and MCO. The CD3 received $2,600 for its activities.

University of Toledo College of Pharmacy faculty members Fred Williams and Kim Schmude recently judged the junior high/high school Northwest District Science Day on campus, which features a pharmacy award sponsored by the college. The first place $100 winner of the "UT Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Award" was Gloria Scott (above left) of St. Aloysius for her presentation on "Antacid Medications." Winning the second place $50 prize was Caroline Berger (above right) of St. Joan of Arc for "Caffeine & Typing Speed."

Beyond the Classroom
Dr. William Messer, Professor and Chair of Pharmacology at The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy, was nominated for the Lancelot C.A. Thompson Service to Students Award. The award recognizes an individual who exemplifies what it means to be student-focused in their duties at UT and who excel in providing service to students. Several students from the University Bible Fellowship nominated Dr. Messer, who has served as a faculty adviser to the group for 10 years. In April, the group took first place in the co-ed division of the Songfest competition, at which Dr. Messer played upright base for two performances.

Eight new 5th year University of Toledo College of Pharmacy students were initiated in March into the Beta Eta Chapter of Rho Chi, the national honor society of the pharmacy profession. Exceptional Students
Dr. Katherine Wall, Honors Director of The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy (UTCP), has announced that 61 first-year students entering the UTCP in Fall 2004 have been accepted into the University-wide Honors Program. Entrance into the UT Honors Program is reserved for exceptional students whose college-bound test scores and previous high school records merit acceptance. The College of Pharmacy congratulates these students on their commitment to academic excellence.



NIH Contract
The National Institutes of Health (NIH), through Case Western University, have awarded The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy a $51,799 contract titled, "Development of a Molecular Library: Identification of Compounds for the Brain Institutes Bioactive Compound Collection." Dr. William Messer, a Professor and Chair of Pharmacology, will lead the development of the compound library with a team of UT researchers.

Infectious Disease Qualifications
The American Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties has named Dr. Steven J. Martin, an Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice at The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy, as a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist.

December 2003 Ph.D.s
Sunghan Yim and Mohammad Mohammad each received the Ph.D. in Medicinal Chemistry from The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy in December.

Dr. Yim’s presentation, supervised by Dr. Katherine Wall, was titled, "Role of IL-12 and Interferon-gamma in Active and Passive Experimental Autoimmune Myasthenia Gravis." Dr. Yim will pursue postdoctoral work.

Dr. Mohammad’s dissertation, supervised by Dr. Marcia McInerney, was titled, "The Role of Innate Immunity in Type I Diabetes." Dr. Mohammad also passed the Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Examination and is performing his internship hours at CVS in Michigan. He will take the pharmacy licensure exam in the spring, then pursue postdoctoral work in fall 2004.
